Medication Adherence and Related Factors in Elderly Hemodialysis Patents

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate medication adherence and related factors in elderly hemodialysis patients.
Method: The convenience samples were used in 123 elderly hemodialysis patients who were being treated in seven outpatient hemodialysis rooms in Seoul and Kyonggi-do. Data collection took place from October 7th 2010 to November 12th 2010. The structured questionnaires included content of medication adherence, expectation for medication,
resistance to medication, knowledge about medication, and attitude toward medication. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 17.0. Specifically, the mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test were used.

Result: There was a statistically significant difference between medication adherence and drug discomfort(χ²
=5.297, p=.026).
Conclusion: Nurses caring for the elderly hemodialysis patients should take into account the patient’s drug discomfort to increase the patient’s medication adherence.
